Browns Bay School

Minstrel Show

25 February, 2010

On Friday 19th February 2010, the Minstrel and his wife came to Browns Bay primary school. We went to our school hall to see him perform Hiwi the Kiwi goes fishing. We had loads of fun singing and dancing. The whole point of the show was to teach kids how to keep cool and safe while they are fishing. He gave out prizes and got people to go up onto the stage and help him demonstrate stuff. He was funny, entertaining and not even the teachers could sit still. He is an amazing man with a special talent.

"We all went to the minstrel show on Friday 19th February after lunch. I was so excited because it was one of my favourite shows.
I rushed into the classroom as soon as the bell rang and I had a huge smile on my face. When we came into the hall, he was strumming his guitar. The minstrel came because he wanted to teach us about responsible fishing, fish, and water safety. The show was called ‘Fishing for the future’. It sounded very interesting and inspiring.
The first song we sang was Hiwi the kiwi song, but this time it was much more interesting because he changed the words in the verses and it was about Hiwi the kiwi going fishing. When we finished the song, I felt like singing it one more time.
After the amazing Hiwi the kiwi song, we learnt about fish. He gave us lots of advice; I learnt lots of new things. One of things that I learnt was that we are not allowed to go fishing in the marine reserve. Once he finished talking about fish, he called up children to tell us the story how he nearly drowned. The first person to go up was Gray from our class. Gray told us the story how he nearly drowned when his little sister jumped on him when he was swimming in the pool and his dad jumped in the pool to save him with his clothes on.
Once Gray had told us his funny story, the minstrel gave us more information about fish.
These are some of the things that I learned... I learnt that you can only catch fish that are 27cm. If you caught a fish smaller than 27cm, then you have to carefully put it back because it is still a baby and its scales could get damaged. If you caught a very big fish, then you need to put it back as well because it might have babies.
After that, we learnt about boat safety which I was hoping we would learn more about as I hardly knew anything about it. I learnt that if you were fishing and you fell out of the boat, then you would need something special if you wanted to be saved. You should always be well prepared with a life jacket and special flares and rockets that could send signals to the satellite.
The Minstrel show was an amazing show and it was really worth paying for. It is one of the most humorous and funny shows that I have ever seen. I hope I see another minstrel show that is just as funny. "
